Case Study

Design a torsion spring to lift and hold a storage container lid.

Customer Request:  Design a torsion spring that will lift a storage container lid and hold it at a 60-degree angle.

Rockford Spring's engineers were able to use the dimensions and weight of the lid to calculate the torque requirements of a suitable spring.  By refining the rate of the spring using the wire diameter and the number of coils, we were able to achieve a design that opened the lid very smoothly.  The hinge design was also refined to allow enough room for a spring design that could produce the loads required without being overstressed.

Prototypes were supplied to the customer that performed as expected and met their design criteria.

Rockford Spring is always available to work with your engineering group to solve any spring related design problems!
